What is a Burial?

Burial is a traditional type of final disposition where the deceased is placed into the ground or entombed in a mausoleum. According to the traditional rituals, the deceased is embalmed and placed into a casket that is buried. However, alternative forms of burial are becoming more popular, such as green burials. Another common practice in recent years is to have a burial after cremation. This means that the deceased’s ashes are placed into the ground and buried.

Why Choose Burial?

Choosing to have a service is one of the most important things when facing the loss of a loved one. Burial service is a way of honoring and respecting their life, and it allows family and friends to say express their feelings and say their goodbyes, find closure and start their healing process.

Moreover, a burial service gives your family and friends a meaningful place to visit when you want to feel close to your loved one. It can be a personal or family tradition to regularly visit the gravesite to leave flowers, share memories, or simply sit and think about your loved one.

Burial services are also the most traditional form of final disposition for many religions. Especially in Catholicism and Judaism, religions that believe in the physical resurrection of the body, traditional burial services are encouraged.

Burial Service Types

Whether you want a traditional in-ground burial or an above-ground entombment in a mausoleum, our funeral home can help you plan a meaningful burial service.

Some burial services you can choose from are:

  • Immediate Burial - A burial without a visitation or service. Your family may decide on this option if your loved one requested that there be no visitation or service
  • Visitation - Also known as a wake, is a time when family and friends can gather with an open or closed casket at the funeral home or a church before the funeral service or burial. Having a visitation before the funeral service gives people an opportunity to pay their respects to the deceased and express their condolences to their family.
  • Traditional Funeral Service - A service for a loved one that can take place at our funeral home, church, or another location. This service can be customized by a family to honor their loved one's life, and it can include a eulogy, scripture readings, prayers, memorial songs, and other meaningful tributes.
  • Graveside Service - A graveside service can be held instead of a traditional funeral service or in addition to a funeral service. A graveside service takes place at the cemetery and can be a smaller and shorter service gathering before the burial takes place.
  • Celebration of Life Service - This is similar to a traditional funeral service but provides more opportunities for personalization. It can be held after the burial, and so people can continue to celebrate and honor their loved one’s memory.
  • Green Burial - This environmentally friendly burial is an alternative that offers a natural return to the earth. There is no embalming so the body can naturally decompose and nourish the soil. Our funeral home is proud to partner with Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery in Gainesville, Florida for an eco-friendly alternative to a traditional burial.
